Don't be intimidated by the Vanilla, it can be quite easy even in the home. The main thing to consider would be light, but a bright windowsill should accommodate its higher lighting needs. Let me know if you'd like to give it a try, we currently have 2 forms of Vanilla planifolia. Good luck! - Clint

I am looking forward to future posts. I spoke to Clint about finding a vanilla orchid and became shy at the prospect of failing to raise it well...I recently received a "Phalaenopsis hybrid" as a gift-- it's nothing special, but a good place to start, and its color is beautiful.

Hello Bill,

There are a few sources for the deli cups. The size I most commonly use is a 32oz cup and the most economical place I have found is a local restaurant supply company (These usually always sell to the public). If you are in the SLC area Gigi is a good source. Another good place is Costco. Look in their plastic/disposable cup area, lately they have had about 5 sizes of CLEAR plastic cups that work great.

We have sold many sizes of the translucent "orchid" pots with the side slits over the last 10 years and they are great for gauging moisture retention and root growth in the pot. But they don't have the same benefits the deli cups do. By creating your own holes in the bottom of the cups you can control the flow of the water out of the bottom (think SLOW) and this way the roots uptake much more H2O. And by not having the slits on the sides you keep the humidity in the root zone much longer and the roots will not dry out as fast. I have seen the best results with 2-3 small holes burned into the bottom with a saudering iron.

Good Luck!
